Tornadoes Wreak Havoc in the Windy City
At least 11 tornadoes touched down in parts of the Chicago area on Wednesday, causing widespread damage and power outages. The tornadoes were part of a severe storm system that also brought heavy rain and hail to the region.Two of the tornadoes were reported near Des Moines, Iowa, and another just outside O'Hare Airport. The Weather Service said a tornado also touched down near Sugar Grove, Illinois. The National Weather Service issued 16 tornado warnings for the Chicago area during the evening.
In the wake of the storms, thousands of people were without power. Trees were uprooted and homes were damaged. The city of Chicago declared a state of emergency and activated its emergency operations center.
