Alaska Airlines Flight Crashes in Tanana River
Two People on Board, Fate Unknown
Fairbanks, Alaska (AP) - April 25, 2024
A Douglas C-54 Skymaster airplane carrying two people crashed into the icy waters of the Tanana River near Fairbanks on Tuesday, April 23. The fate of the individuals on board remains unknown.
Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying low over the river when it suddenly lost altitude and disappeared into the water. Rescue crews, including divers and boats, have been dispatched to the scene, but the strong currents and icy conditions have hampered their efforts.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the crash. The plane was owned by a private company and was being used for a charter flight.
This is the second plane crash in Alaska in as many weeks. On April 10, a DC-4 aircraft crashed near Fairbanks International Airport, killing all 10 people on board.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has issued a travel advisory for the Tanana River in the area of the crash site. Residents are advised to avoid the area until the investigation is complete.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact the NTSB at 1-800-877-9408.
